Eric Talbot and his Quazine

I was looking around for something to use for a new blog post, and I decided to go delving into my folders of ancient digital photos. I found these in one section of the folder in which I keep all my photos that I took with my old Sony Mavica digital camera -- the one which (high tech at the time!) stored its images on floppy disks.

I found a bunch of fun photos, and here are two of them from 1999.

This first one shows Eric Talbot (when his hair was still long) working at one of Mirage's early Macintosh computers. I'm not sure exactly where in the studio this was taken -- it may have been in Eric's office. Check out the old CRT monitors and the Syquest drive (I'm glad we don't have to use THEM anymore).

This second image is of a Quazine sculpture that Eric painted and which I think he had in his office. "What's a Quazine?", you ask? This was one of the cool aliens that the fertile mind and hand of Jim Lawson designed for our PLANET RACERS graphic novel trilogy. Mike Dooney sculpted one of these little guys (with his usual expertise) and gave it to me for my birthday. I was so taken by it that I asked him if he could cast it and make a bunch of duplicates, which he did. I think there were maybe fifty or one hundred of these things cast in hard grey resin. I gave some of them away, but the rest I was going to use as promotional items for PLANET RACERS. I think I may have sold a dozen or so at shows or signings we went to, but I got tired of bringing them around because they're kind of bulky in the boxes I put together for them. So the ones that are left are now gathering dust in bags under my pool table. -- PL

Cool post PL!

Eric looks happy at whatever he was working on!! Haha!

Those Quazines look interesting!

I wouldn't mind getting one of those. Would you consider autographing them if you did wind up selling them?

Just a thought....

-->> Actually, you think you can maybe post some more of yours and Jim's Planet Racers stuff.

They are inherently connected to the Turtles (( and was my definitive choice for reading in the late 90s - early aughts that and Guzzi )).

I'd particularly like to see something also in regards to the Godman / TMNT x-overs.

Maybe it ain't said much, but i really appreciated the Planet Racer-verse showing up in TMNT and Falcon's suprize appearance in 'Fast Forward' as a young Racer. Damm that was so cool !!

Pete I'm game for one of those, if your are interested in parting with them. Of course, it only a matter of if you're willing to sell them and for how much.

Oh my gad, Syquest drives, I remember those!

In the good old days of the mid-90's, when flash drives didn't exist, and Burning CDs cost a small fortune...

We used to use them to store multimedia projects before going to master, being able to save 200MB on one piece of removable media was quite the luxury back them. And quite the pain if one became corrupted.

We still own a Sony Mavica camera that stored a dozen or so hires pics on a floppy. My wife refuses to get rid of it because back in the day her father spent a lot of money on it. So it is collecting dust while we use our new Canon. Ah how we become attached to things...

I never had the 200MB Syquest -- mostly we used the 44MB and then a few of the 88MB disks. I guess for their time they were pretty cool, but one thing I don't miss at all is dealing with the SCSI connectors which were necessary to connect these things to a computer. Talk about electronic voodoo!

It is pretty amazing how media of this type have changed -- I just bought a 32 gigabyte SD memory card for my camera. That's more than 600 times the memory capacity of one of those 44MB Syquests, and it's about the size of a stack of five postage stamps! -- PL

Thanks, Dave. I had a great time working the PR cast into that "Across the Universe" episode of the TMNT show. I hope that someday Jim and I will revisit that universe -- we've talked about it some but haven't settled on a story. -- PL
