Black velvet

What kind of fruit would you say this is?

I found it yesterday while grocery shopping at our local Big Y supermarket, and bought a few of them. They're delicious.

Give up?

It's an APRICOT!

I'd never seen an apricot with this color skin before -- all the ones I'd encountered previously had that kind of orange/yellow coloration. I'm a big apricot fan -- when I was a kid, it was a HUGE treat to get dried apricots. And this "black velvet" variety may just be my new favorite fruit. -- PL

Dave, it tastes a little more mellow than your standard apricot, but overall pretty similar. -- PL

I was worried you were going to say it was some kind of horrendously off yet incredibly well shaped apple or something! There's a group that farms blood plums here in Australia that calls them Black Velvet. Still, I can't say I've ever seen an apricot quite like that.

That's a color picture?

Wow, I've never seen one, and I have a Bristol Farms across from me, and they usually have stuff like this.

Pete, I'm with you on apricots, I love them as well. In fact I love pretty much all fruit. Especially anything with a pit. However, I can't quite say I have seen a black apricot before, but I have heard of pluots, which are a plum genetically crossed with an apricot. Maybe that's what you found.

This says a cross between an apricot and a plum. I saw something else about black apricot by itself, but it said it was of inferior taste and purpleish flesh.

Purple.. Donatello! NO wonder it appeals to you!

:D

Cynthia, suddenly needing to go buy some fruit.

I deleted this to repost because I didn't want to double post and there is no edit! I found these at the store across the street just a bit ago-- sweet, but weirdly tart/sour at the end of each bite-- very juicy. I can see why you like them.

-->> ..so this is one of those funky ' new expeiramental ' fruits.

They are doing that allot with apples too ( for example ).

Varieties i'd never even heard of and strange new hybrid fruits !!

Supposedly some of them taste very good.

Maybe i'll try this mutated apricot. I like tart-type things alot, Cyn !!

I'm kinda agreeing with Joe about the Apricot Plum thing... We have 'plumicots' that grow on our property. I imagine the more plum you put into it, the darker it becomes.

Cross=bred fruits are always interesting...

Dave-- from what I remember, apricots by themselves are tart or sour, so it makes sense that it would be sweet then as sudden tangy sour flavor at the edge.

lol-- Welcome to pLairds tmnt/fruit report blog!

The eight "black velvet" apricots I bought are now down to two -- I just ate two with my breakfast this morning. They really are great, and I will be looking for more.

I've found several odd and interesting fruits at the Big Y stores in recent years. Probably the coolest was a thing called a "monstera" fruit. It looked like a large cucumber wth a skin which had hexagonal facets -- if the "Thing" from the Fantastic Four were colored light green instead of orange, one of his fingers might look something like this.

You knew it was ripe by the fact that these hexagonal facets would start to separate and drop off, revealing the central core of the fruit, which had the color and texture of a banana.... and an amazing flavor, which I would describe as a combination or banana, apple, and kiwi. Very yummy. -- PL

I love those but sometimes they look like plums.
