Blast from the Past #280: Firesheep

Although this may look like a (justly) rejected design I might have submitted to Playmates Toys years ago for consideration as another mutant animal character in the TMNT toy line, it is not.

The things is, even though I know it wasn't done for Playmates, I don't really remember WHAT it is, or what I drew it for. Given the drawing style and technique, I'd guess it to be from the late 1970s or early 1980's. And it is so specific -- an anthropomorphic sheep in a fireman's gear. Weird. -- PL

It really has the look of an action figure. Same kind of body type and stance too. Perhaps this drawing proves that the whole thing was just meant to be!

The first thing that came to mind was another rejected toy design.
Consdiering your photgraphic memory and detailed files I know the exact reason for this intriguing drawing is there somewhere.

Perhaps its for a Northampton shop or perhaps a firehouse?

My "photographic memory"...? I wish! But you may be right -- somewhere in my files may be a note or something which explains this. The "WPFD" on the character's helmet and shirt makes me think it may refer to a specific town or city's fire department... but which one? I have no idea at this point. I Googled "WPFD" last night and came up 9100 hits, including at least three different fire departments on just the first page of search results. None of these rang any bells for me, unfortunately. -- PL

Thanks for the reply, Mr. Laird! It just seems with your eleborate detailed files through the years you'd have some reference. Its there somewhere!
As for the photographic memory, you've fooled us into thinking such. The guys and gals will agree!
If I may say so,I feel more connected post-sale than pre-sale. Much appreciated for reaching out to us!

It's crazy how similar it is to the Playmates toy style. The large hands and head, the bent action pose legs, the accessories. Pretty neat to see this thanks for posting it.
