Finished!

I posted the unfinished version of this drawing back on November 29, 2010... and just five minutes ago I finished it... finished inking it, anyway. I may do a color version.

One of the reasons it had remained uncompleted for that long was that I had not penciled it fully enough when I'd started inking it. As I was explaining it to Jeannine this morning as we sat in the sunroom, she writing, me drawing, there are times when I can do a REALLY rough, loose sketch, and feel confident that even with those barest of bones to build on, I can grab an inking tool and go to work.

But then there are other times, like with the sketch that this started out as, where that confidence is not totally there, and the inking is hesitant and uncertain. It's usually because although the concept of the piece might be firm in my mind, the actual shapes and shades aren't. In all honesty, I'm still not sure this one came out as I originally wanted it to, but that being said, I do like it, and consider it done (at least for the black and white version). PL

I love the "jurassic park" look from a distance. Not sure what your going for but I see a "dino" in the back and scared cyclist.

Greatwork

Thanks... but I think I must have failed in my intent if you see a dinosaur in the image. Just curious -- did you click on it a couple of times to get the larger version? It's definitely easier to see the details that way. -- PL

I did I guess dino was the wrong term, my fault. Its like an aztec armor wearing t-rex I guess not your typical dino.

Thanks for the annotated image. You picked out the appropriate "body" parts correctly, but when I drew this thing, I wasn't sure if the giant figure was (a) some kind of monumental statue, such as Jack Kirby used to draw to decorate Asgard or New Genesis when he penciled the "Thor" comic for Marvel or the "New Gods" for DC, or an abandoned and overgrown war robot... or something else entirely. I still haven't decided. -- PL

very nice, I saw the eyes and mouth first then the legs.
It kind reminds me of that music video by Fat Boy Slim: Right Here Right Now

I had a different take on this piece. There is a lot going on here. A lot for the imagination to play with. The first thing that I thought was the man on the bike seems to be intimidated by the monstrous forest around him. I do see the dino but, I'm looking at it as more the man on the bike is imagining these frightful things encroaching on upon him. That's the beauty of good art. You can find what you want in a certain piece. This reminds me of when I was a kid I got lost riding my bike on the dirt paths way out in the woods by my home. It took me hours to find my way out. I was so lost, mixed up, and scared. In my young mind there where lots of scary things that could come out of the woods and attack me at any moment. This is an excellent piece of work! Thank you for sharing it with us. :)

Fascinating! I saw a cyclist emerging from an overgrown forest first. Then, when I went to the larger image, the head and eyes leaped out at me. Makes me think of days when I used to ride my bike on an old abandoned mill site that was slowly being reclaimed by the woods.

Amy, that sounds pretty cool. By any chance, would that be somewhere near us?

There is something eerily compelling about contemplating the process by which human works are absorbed and erased by the efforts of nature -- slow, patient, and inexorable. -- PL
