What lies beneath

Easthampton, MA is just a few miles south of Northampton. It's a nice little town. It has a lovely pond in the middle of the town, one I have enjoyed walking around and occasionally over (when it's frozen in the winter).

Recently, for reasons unknown to me, the pond was drained. It's been this way for several weeks, and a few days ago I happened to stop and take some shots of a view which I might never see again. I put them together into this little panorama, looking south across the pond from Cottage Street.

I've always found this kind of thing fascinating -- a glimpse of a secret world, revealed. -- PL

Have you ever tried stitching together two different photos to create a panorama? It might be interesting to stitch together the full lake with this drained one, so the left would be the full one and the right drained. It might be a neat exercise.

You might also try this over the course of a year, with the trees in spring bloom, summer foliage, fall colors, and winter branches.

I've downloaded Panorama, but never had the time to use it.

I think that they drained it because you cancelled Forever War ;)
They are just dredging it to make it deeper I guess.

Doon-boy is right, it was drained so they could dredge the bottom to make it deeper. Apparently, you used to be able to boat a long ways up river but now it is too shallow for even a canoe in some places.

Since my studio is right across the street I can tell you one negative side effect is the smell of all the mud and dead fish. Very nasty!

Man,I have been waiting FOREVER.lol It was advertised in my third grade year and now I'm starting grad school. As long as we do see it its good.:)

That is a unique scene. Maybe not a good one if its depleting water,but a great photo op!

Mike Dooney for the win!

I've always found scenes like this particularly creepy... Not entirely sure why, maybe I'm expecting something bizarre to turn up at the bottom of the lake or something to that effect...

according to my sources at WNS, more than a few dead bodies were found after they drained it.

-->> So this IS this a man - made lake @_@ !!

When they drained the local Prospect lake ( a man made formation ) to put a new pumping system and other amenities to protect it like a fancy lining i'm not sure if any dead bodies were found.. but plenty of people went in after hours and found hosts of strange objects, rested old Pepsi and Mountain Dew cans from the 60s and the rested shell if what appeared to 68 VW Bug. I went down there hoping to find a shark, but by the time i got there they were laying the thick tarping and several large construction vehicles were in this " pit " that was once the very lake i used to swim in and and catch crawdads as a child.

Pretty odd and awkwardly surreal.
