Blast from the Past #213: "Scat" logo designs

Knowledgeable fans of TMNT history know about the significance to that history of the free "comics gazette" called "Scat". If Kevin Eastman had never seen that copy of "Scat" on the floor of the PVTA bus as he traveled from Northampton to Amherst back in 1980, he would never have seen my artwork in it, would not have looked me up through the Graphic Arts Guild in Northampton, we would never have met, and thus -- no Turtles.

I ran across these sketches recently, and they brought back memories. These are from the early days of Scat, when we were still trying to figure out what the logo should look like. I doodled these designs in my sketchbook...

We went back and forth on various logo designs, finally settling on this one, which I drew by hand:

It's been so long that I can't remember exactly, but I think this final design was based on an idea that either Marty Maceda or Brian Turner (two of the "Scat" co-founders) submitted. I also can't remember why I got the job of finishing it -- maybe just because I volunteered! We used this logo on the cover of the magazine.

I also did a slightly fancier, "rendered" version, as seen here:

We used this on various "Scat" business forms, like letterhead and invoices. -- PL

If I may be so bold...
For those of you who are interested in reading the first issue of Scat (including Peter's first, non-self published, work) You may find it here.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about the first work thing, Pete.

Stephan, I actually did have a few things published before this. And, given that I was one of the founding members of the group that put together Scat, and thus one of the publishers of Scat, then you might even define my work being in Scat as a kind of self-publishing.

In case you are interested, my actual first published work was in a high school fanzine called "The Mountain Ear"... I supplied a drawing for the cover, as I recall. -- PL

Very interesting! Thanks for the info! It's always better to be corrected than to go around spout misinformation :-)

If you run across a copy of The Mountain Ear, I would love to see it.

Sorry Peter but there is something amusing about reading the words "Free Scat" these days on the internet.

Be careful posting up scat stuff, you might start getting some very strange traffic to this blog, lol.

-->> ..i am assuming the connotation at the time for "SCAT" was much different than the current, derogatory version of the homonym.

It's use on the book is "SCAT" in regards to the use of jazz and a style of singing.

Wow... I have never felt quite so honored to be a PVTA rider. I never found anything cool on the floor, though.

another great autobiographical post.
this might be the only blog you can actually learn from.
the bottom of the bus changed your lives.it makes me think destiny.
(like what if there were no turts)

the best logo won.
is it supposed to mean cougar poop and jazz singing?
like how one word means both the greatest and grossest possible things to put in your ears.

I did not know the word "scat" before it was brought up at one of our meetings when we were trying to come up with a name for our "Free Comics Gazette". Somebody mentioned "scat", and I think there was a general appreciation for the somewhat whimsical double-meaning of the word. -- PL

Good Day Sir,

Apologies for commenting such an old post. I'm trying to research just how many issues of SCAT were published. This thread was the most relevant I could find.

Aside from the first issue (v.1 #1)and the issue with the Halloween themed cover(v.2 #2), would you know how many additional issues saw publication?

I do enjoy the humor and anecdotes found through the magazine, especially the reader's letters. Though it was most likely fictitious, I appreciated how SCAT saved a local reader from throwing himself from a bridge...

Thank you for your time

Mike

It went on for a couple of years at least. I have a handful of old issues from '80 and '81 I'm putting up on CragsList here: https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/bks/6211334878.html

My uncle was Brian Turner. Be passed away a couple years ago. I was an enormous fan of the TMNT growing up... Not realizing until later in life that it was my uncle's magazine, SCAT , that was responsible for the bringing together Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. My uncle had no kids and so I was p the only nephew that has the privilege of living close enough to him to see him throughout the years. His porn name was RENRUT, our last name spelled backwards. He never regretted not being a part of the success of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, but was always proud that his magazine brought together the creators, though he never spoke of it. It's one of the cooler things that I came to learn about my uncle's interesting life. NO SCAT maintainer.... No mutant ninja turtles. Kevin Eastman has first come up with some version of ninja mutants (if I remember the story correctly) before they came up with TMNT. I could be wrong, but it was a long time ago I was told the specifics. Anyways, glad to see Our mention my uncle by name. I miss him a lot. He was special indeed.
