Blast from the Past #279: Fruit bowls on coquille board

These two drawings, done on coquille board, were created back in the late 1970's or early 1980's for a local chain of supermarkets called "Big Y" and used in advertising circulars.

I was given two sample fuit bowls by the local Big Y supermarket to use as reference for these drawings. That was pretty nifty, as I got to eat the fruit after drawing it! For a "starving artist", that was a nice perk. -- PL

Drawings like these were a staple of supermarket advertising in my childhood. I have very distinct memories of seeing art like this in the Sunday newspaper ads, before everything switched to photography (the plight of everything illustration related it seems) pretty cool to see you did some of them.

Did you have an agent during the pre-Mirage days? Prior to this blog, about the most of knew of your work from that time period was that you'd worked on SCAT but I've been pretty astonished to see all your output during that time period from reading your posts.

Interestingly, outside a few store ads the only place I see artwork done for ads these days is my local paper.

I agree with Adam. Its great to learn so much about our favorite creator Turtle-related and otherwise such as this piece!

No, I didn't have an agent... and never really considered having one. Maybe I should have! It might have led to a less "hand-to-mouth" existence as a freelancer. But in all honesty, back then I don't think I would have had the slightest idea of how to go about getting an agent (assuming, of course, an agent would have WANTED to represent me!). -- PL

Yes -- in fact, it's one of the two dominant regional supermarket chains ("Stop and Shop" being the other), and it's where I usually shop for groceries in Northampton. -- PL
